"Lord Set Our Hearts On Fire"

Sep 27, 2026  •  Pastor Kimberly R. Whitsett

What does it mean to have a heart that burns with holy fire? In Luke 24, we encounter two disciples walking the road to Emmaus, weighed down by grief and confusion after the crucifixion. They had placed every hope in Jesus, and now the tomb was empty and their world had collapsed. Yet in the middle of their despair, the risen Christ came alongside them without fanfare, without announcement, and simply walked with them. He listened to their pain, engaged their questions, and then opened the Scriptures to them in a way that set their hearts ablaze. This message invites us to examine the condition of our own spiritual flame. Many of us remember a season when our faith was electric, when worship was effortless, when we could not wait to gather with other believers. But life has a way of turning a roaring fire into a quiet simmer. Disappointment, grief, routine, and loss can all dim our light without us even noticing. The road to Emmaus reminds us that a low flame does not mean an absent God. The disciples could not recognize Jesus walking beside them, but he recognized them. That is a profound grace worth sitting with. Our confusion does not repel his presence. Our inability to see him clearly does not stop him from showing up. The fire was reignited not through an emotional moment alone, but through an encounter with the living Word. That is the invitation extended to each of us today.
